New Movies on Satellite TV

2009 is off to a great start when it comes to new movies (Watchmen, Coraline, Wolverine, a Transformers sequel, a Star Trek remake, Pixars Up and Avatar just to name a few) but admittedly, it will be tough to topple last year when it comes to great films. Many of those films are now premiering on satellite TV Pay-Per-View. Whats debuting in the month of March on satellite TV?
First of all, you have the Oscar-nominated work in Clint Eastwoods Changeling, a true story about a misplaced child and a corrupt police departments attempt to deliver a replacement kid to a grieving mother. The film stars Angelina Jolie as Christine Collins, in one of this Hollywood icons better performances. However, the best performance of the film is given by Jason Butler Harner, as the demented killer Gordon Northcott. For whatever Angelina Jolie accomplishes in playing an identifiable mother, Harner accomplishes double for playing a villain so alien and so beyond human comprehension. Changeling is not a feel good movie, despite its Eastwood-esque moments of humanity, but it was one of 2008s most powerful films.
Saw V wont be winning any awards any time soon, but few can deny that this seriesif slightly overdonewas one of the most original films to come out of the horror genre. Saw V is hammy enough not to scare you into therapy but is still far more disturbing and suspenseful than many other campier horror films. (Anyone get a good look at Mortuary?) If you prefer headier fare than take a look at Woody Allens Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a complicated love story starring Oscar winner Javier Barden, Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz and Scarlet Johansson whose hot enough to merit three Academy Award nominations.
Meanwhile on HBO, you have Street Kings with Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker, and Nims Island, starring Jodie Foster and Little Miss Sunshines Abigail Breslin. If action is what you crave, then 10,000 BC certainly has some mammoth-sized thrills (literally) and has earned comparisons to the Spartan epic 300. Over on Showtime, one of the best movies of 2008 will be premieringPaul Thomas Andersons There Will Be Blood. Its hard to imagine why a movie about heartless revenge, evil motivations and lots of oil would make for a fascinating two hours, but once you understand that acting phenom Daniel Day Lewis is starring in the lead role, then things start to make sense. Elsewhere on Showtime, you can see the documentary Sicko written, directed and reported by the edgy Michael Moore. Finally, if you love Changeling and want more Angelina than you can handle, take a look at A Mighty Heart, a movie that undoubtedly inspired Nadya Sulema, aka the octuplets mom.
